Jack Kilby is one of three scientists to share the 2000 Nobel Physics prize on Tuesday, October 10,2000. Kilby of U.S. electronics group Texas Instruments Inc., takes half of the prize for his part in the invention of the integrated circuit, or computer chip. Zhores Alferov of A.F. Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute in St Petersburg, Russia and Herbert Kroemer of the University of California at Santa Barbara share the other half of the prize for developing semiconductors with practical uses from cellphones to barcode readers.
