WASHINGTON (AFP) - The father of an Afghan immigrant accused of conspiring to bomb New York around the anniversary of 9/11 was formally indicted Thursday for lying to FBI investigators.

Mohammed Zazi, father of Najibullah Zazi, was indicted by a grand jury in Denver, Colorado, "for making a false statement in a matter involving international and domestic terrorism," the Department of Justice said.

He is free on a 50,000 dollar bond, with electronic monitoring, and was due to appear in court Friday.

The elder Zazi, who was arrested September 19, allegedly admitted to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation when they asked him about his son's activities. If found guilty he faces eight years in prison.

Meanwhile, Najibullah Zazi is being held in New York where he was indicted last month in the alleged plot.

Najibullah Zazi, who before his September 20 arrest worked as an airport shuttle bus driver in Denver, is accused of preparing a bombing spree in New York, possibly on the eighth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Prosecutors say he carried bomb-making instructions in a laptop and had been shopping for large quantities of chemicals found in beauty products that could have been the ingredients for explosives.

They also say he received explosives training in Peshawar, Pakistan, a hotbed of Al-Qaeda activity.
