SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Online movie rental giant Netflix and TV-top digital recorder pioneer TiVo on Thursday announced an alliance to stream movies from the Internet to television sets in the United States.

The US companies said they are testing the technology in several thousand homes and expect it to be widely available in early December.

"For Netflix and TiVo subscribers, this collaboration offers a fabulously easy way to enhance the enjoyment of watching movies in the comfort of their living rooms," said Netflix chief executive Reed Hastings.

The more than 12,000 films and television shows that Netflix members can watch online as part of a monthly subscription service will be viewable on television sets equipped with TiVo digital recorders.

"Joining forces with Netflix creates the ultimate video on demand service... delivering the best content available anywhere right to the TV," said TiVo chief executive Tom Rogers.

"Adding Netflix to our already vast library of content differentiates TiVo even further from any other offering in the market today."

The alliance is a direct challenge to Apple TV, a device launched by the iconic California company in 2007 that routes films bought or rented from online shop iTunes to television sets.
