ANKARA (AFP) - At least one person drowned and 13 were injured when a ferry carrying about 150 people and 75 vehicles sank late Sunday off the northwestern Turkish city of Bandirma, the CNN Turk news channel reported.

The roll-on-roll-off ferry sank about 300 metres (yards) from the shore, shortly after leaving Bandirma for Istanbul.

Civil defence teams, divers and local fishermen were mobilised to rescue the passengers who jumped in the sea after the accident.

Bandirma sub-governor Salih Keser quoted the vessel's captain, who was rescued, as saying that the ferry was carrying about 150 people as well as 73 trucks and two cars, Anatolia news agency reported.

The captain suggested the accident might have happened because of misplaced cargo.

Keser said the entire crew survived the incident, but did not give a figure.

Some drivers were asleep inside their vehicles when the ferry sank, media reports said.
