Verizon, unions debate contracts as deadline looms
2008-08-10
NEW YORK - Verizon Communications Inc. and two unions representing 65,000 workers are still talking contracts, one day ahead of a deadline for a possible strike. Representatives of the telecommunications giant and one of the unions, the Communications Workers of America, say no deal has been reached. The unions have threatened to strike if there's no agreement by 12:01 a.m. Monday. Verizon spokesman Eric Rabe says the company is optimistic it can reach a deal with the union. The company's contract with the Communications Workers union and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers expired last weekend. A strike could delay installations and repair of phone and broadband lines.
