Board member, former Microsoft president to retire
2008-06-18
REDMOND, Wash. - Longtime Microsoft Corp. board member Jon A. Shirley will not seek re-election in November, the software maker said. Shirley joined Microsoft in 1983 as president and chief operating officer after serving as an executive at early PC maker Tandy Corp. He retired from Microsoft in 1990 but remained on the company's board. His departure comes as Chairman Bill Gates shifts his own focus away from Microsoft to his philanthropic foundation. But Shirley said in a statement Tuesday that he was confident in Microsoft's leadership. "I could only make this decision knowing that Microsoft is well-positioned for success in the years ahead," he said. Shirley, 70, is a director of Manzanita Capital, a private financial services company in Seattle. He is also chairman of the Seattle Art Museum's board, and he and his wife, Mary, established a $20 million endowment to keep the museum's year-old Olympic Sculpture Park open free of charge. He lives in the Seattle suburb of Medina and collects and races vintage Ferraris.
