Asians dominate shortlist for Long-Thibaud piano award
2007-10-23
Asian pianists make up 10 of the 15 finalists for this year's Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud award, the organisers of the prestigious Paris-based competition said Tuesday. The jury shortlisted five South Koreans, four Japanese and a Taiwanese candidate, along with two Frenchmen, two US pianists and a Russian to take part in the semi-finals in the French capital Wednesday and Thursday. For the first time, qualifying rounds for the 100,000 euro (140,000-dollar) prize were carried out anonymously, with judges sitting behind a screen, as part of a bid to ensure transparency and boost the profile of the award. The final of the 2007 competition -- named after a celebrated French pianist and a violinist from the early 20th century -- takes place on Saturday and Sunday.
