Black Eyed Peas bag Mobo for Best Group
2006-09-21
The Black Eyed Peas beat out Gnarls Barkley and OutKast to win the Best Group award at the Mobos, with Corinne Bailey Rae and Lemar bagging the awards for Best UK Female and Male respectively. The Music of Black Origin Awards were also the stage for a protest outside for the dropping of the jazz music category for the awards. London rapper Akala, 22, followed in the footsteps of his older sister Ms Dynamite by winning a Mobo for Best Hip Hop, beating out more established names like Busta Rhymes and Kanye West, at the ceremony in central London's Royal Albert Hall. Ms Dynamite won three Mobos in 2002. Corinne Bailey Rae, 27, a former choirgirl, also picked up the award for Best UK Newcomer, along with her Best UK Female award. R 'n B star Beyonce walked away with the most awards, however, with Mobos for Best International Female, as well as Best Song and Best Video for her track "Deja Vu" featuring Jay-Z. Jay-Z also picked up an award for Best International Male. Sean Paul beat out Bob Marley's son, Damian, for the reggae category. Meanwhile, outside the hall, jazz fans protested against the removal of the jazz category, with a spokesman for the protest saying: "Mobo appears to have forgotten their original purpose." "The removal of the jazz category undermines the original spirit of the Mobo awards and ignores the place of jazz in the heritage of black music and its influence on all other forms of popular music." The winners: Best Group - Black Eyed Peas Best UK Female - Corinne Bailey Rae Best UK Male - Lemar Best Song - Deja Vu (Beyonce featuring Jay-Z) Best Video - Deja Vu (Beyonce featuring Jay-Z) Best International Female - Beyonce Best International Male - Jay-Z Best UK Newcomer - Corinne Bailey Rae Best Hip Hop - Akala Best Reggae - Sean Paul Best DJ - Steve Sutherland Best African Act - Batman Samini Best R 'n B - Rihanna Best Gospel - Nu Life
