The world's largest kite will be flown at the Niagara International Kite Festival, to be held in Niagara Falls Oct. 6-9.

The kite measures 83 by 131 feet, and will be flown by a team led by Masaaki Modegi, president of the Japan Kite Association, in Reservoir State Park in Lewiston, on Saturday and Sunday of Columbus Day weekend.

Prospect Park in Niagara Falls State Park will host a reenactment of an 1848 kite contest on the Friday and Monday of Columbus Day weekend, along with an attempt to connect the U.S. and Canada with an arch of kites.

The original kite contest was held in order to get a string across the Niagara Gorge as a prelude to building a suspension bridge. A 15-year-old boy, Homan Walsh, was successful after several days of struggling with wind currents and bad weather.

Other attractions during the festival will include exhibits on kite history, miniature kites and kite stamps, along with displays of every type of kite imaginable, from art kites to indoor kites to inflatable kites.
