China's Track Superstar Drops Out
It was the race all of China - and, no, this is not journalistic hyperbole - was waiting for. On Aug. 18, under a hazy Beijing sky, Chinese mega-star Liu Xiang was supposed to cruise to victory in heat six of the 110m hurdles' first round. His competitors were, frankly, uninspiring - the man with the second fastest personal best after Liu's 12.88 seconds was a Dutchman who had clocked in a relatively leisurely 13.35 seconds. This was going to be the moment of glory for a man for whom a Beijing gold medal was the foremost wish among the Chinese people, according to a nationwide poll. A sea of Chinese flags waved. The Bird's Nest Stadium thrummed with expectation.

Hurdler Liu Xiang leaves Olympics with leg injury
BEIJING - Liu Xiang and the entire nation of China looked forward to this moment for years: The defending Olympic champion lining up to run the 110-meter hurdles at the Beijing Games. He didn't even get to race. Grimacing and rubbing his troublesome right hamstring before getting into his crouch, Liu pulled up lame just steps into the first round of qualifying Monday, leaving the Summer Games' host country without one of its biggest stars -- and far and away its biggest star in track and field.

Yang Wei finally gets gold in men's gymnastics
BEIJING - Yang Wei clapped as he walked past the vault judges, pumped his fists at the crowd and flashed a thumbs-up for the cameras. He even exchanged high-fives with the competition. Denied in Sydney and disappointed in Athens, he is finally an Olympic champion after winning the men's all-around Thursday. It wasn't close, either. Yang finished with 94.575 points, nearly three points ahead of Kohei Uchimura of Japan. Benoit Caranobe of France won the bronze.
