  • US offers condolences over French deaths in Afghanistan

Obama meets pro-US Sarkozy in Paris
PARIS (AFP) - Barack Obama met in Paris Friday with the pro-US President Nicolas Sarkozy on a world tour aimed at burnishing the White House hopeful's foreign policy credentials ahead of November elections.   Nations:France Afghanistan Israel U.S. Germany   People:Barack Obama John McCain Nicolas Sarkozy Gordon Brown Ronald Reagan Jacques Chirac   Activities:US Election 2008 U.S.-France   2008-07-25

Obama's brief stop in Paris belies his popularity
PARIS - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama expected to spend just enough time in Paris on Friday for talks with the French president and a joint news conference, not a rousing speech like the one he delivered in Berlin.   Nations:France Germany   People:Nicolas Sarkozy Barack Obama John McCain   Activities:US Election 2008 U.S.-France   Source:(AP)   2008-07-25

    Sarkozy-Bush: No-Popularity Contest
The company President Nicolas Sarkozy is keeping these days is unlikely to help reverse his flaccid approval rating. As the week wound down, Sarkozy welcomed President George W. Bush for a valedictory visit by a leader whose own poll numbers are even worse than the French President's - and who is arguably the least loved head of state in the Western world. Nor would Sarkozy have done much to improve his own popularity by inviting Syria's President Bashir al-Assad to be a guest of honor at France's Bastille Day parade. (France has long been at loggerheads with the notoriously authoritarian Assad regime over Syria's role in Lebanon, and particularly in respect of its alleged hand in the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister and French ally Rafic Hariri.)   Nations:Lebanon   People:Nicolas Sarkozy Laura Bush Jacques Chirac George W. Bush, French president criticize Iran, Syria
PARIS - President Bush and French President Nicolas Sarkozy each directed one-two punches against Iran and Syria on Saturday, telling Tehran to stop enriching uranium and scolding Damascus for backing terrorism that destabilizes the Mideast.   Nations:Syria Lebanon U.S. Iran France   People:Carla Bruni Nicolas Sarkozy   Activities:Iran Nuclear Crisis U.S.-France   Source:(AP)   2008-06-14
